... + 吗?
吗 (ma) yes/no questions
Turn any statement into a yes/no question by adding 吗 at the very end — the word order of the statement never changes. Answer by repeating the verb (是 → 是 / 不是, 有 → 有 / 没有) rather than a plain 'yes' or 'no'.
Examples
- 你是学生吗?nǐ shì xué sheng ma
Are you a student?
- 你忙吗?nǐ máng ma
Are you busy?
- 他有车吗?tā yǒu chē ma
Does he have a car?
Common mistake
✗ Wrong: 你是吗学生?
✓ Right: 你是学生吗?
吗 always sits at the very end of the sentence, never in the middle where 是 or the verb was. The statement's word order stays untouched — 吗 is just appended.
