觉得 (juéde) and 认为 (rènwéi) both roughly mean 'to think/feel that' and are both followed directly by a clause, but they differ in tone. 觉得 expresses a personal feeling, impression, or tentative opinion — softer and more casual, and it's also the only one of the two used for physical sensations: 我觉得这个电影很好看 (I think this movie is good), 我觉得冷 (I feel cold). 认为 expresses a more considered, reasoned belief or firm judgment — more formal, common in analysis, debate, or stating expert views: 专家认为这个方法有效 (experts hold that this method is effective). The deciding question: am I sharing a casual feeling/impression, or something about my body (→觉得), or asserting a reasoned, more objective stance (→认为)? 认为 never describes physical sensations.
Examples
wǒ jué de zhè ge cài hěn hǎo chī
I think this dish is delicious.
zhuān jiā rèn wéi kōng qì wū rǎn hěn yán zhòng
Experts believe air pollution is very serious.
wǒ jué de yǒu diǎnr lèi, dàn yī shēng rèn wéi wǒ shēn tǐ hěn jiàn kāng
I feel a bit tired, but the doctor believes my body is very healthy.
Common mistake
✗ Wrong:
Physical sensations (cold, tired, hungry, sick) always use 觉得, never 认为 — 认为 is reserved for reasoned opinions and judgments, not bodily feelings.
Practice this pattern
