HSK mock exam

A timed practice run modeled on the shape of the real HSK paper — not an official exam, and not affiliated with Hanban/CTI/Chinese Testing International. Great for rehearsing pacing and question types, not for predicting your real result.

How the real exam day works

Registration: official HSK tests are registered through chinesetest.cn or an authorized local test center, where you choose your test date, level, and format.

Format: most levels can be taken on paper (pencil-and-paper answer sheet) or by computer (IBT) at centers offering both — the same skills are tested either way.

What to bring: the valid photo ID you registered with, plus your admission ticket/confirmation — every test center requires both.

Timing: arrive with time to spare before your session starts; check your own admission ticket for the exact arrival time your center asks for.

General guidance only — confirm exact requirements with your test center or chinesetest.cn before test day.

Test-taking strategy

Listening: skim the answer options before the audio starts, so you know what to listen for. If you miss a clip, let it go — dwelling on it costs you the next question. Mark your best guess and move on.

Reading: answer the easy matches first, then come back for the harder ones. In true/false questions, be wary of absolute words like “always,” “never,” or “all” — they're often what makes a statement false. Give each question a time budget so one hard item doesn't eat into the rest.

Guessing: never leave a question blank — there's no penalty for a wrong answer, so an educated guess always beats no answer. Eliminate at least one option you're sure is wrong before choosing among what's left.

Pacing: this mock gives about 15 minutes for listening and 20 for reading — roughly 45 seconds per listening question and about a minute per reading question. Check the clock occasionally so the last few questions aren't rushed.

General tactics that help on most timed exams — not specific to any official HSK question.

Choose a band to practice

HSK 1

How the real HSK 1 paper is shaped

Listening: about 20 questions, roughly 15 minutes. Reading: about 20 questions, roughly 17 minutes. No writing or speaking section at this level.

This mock is modeled on that shape, not identical to it — ours uses 20 fresh questions per section with shortened timers (15 min listening, 20 min reading) so a full run stays practical.

HSK 2

How the real HSK 2 paper is shaped

Listening: about 35 questions, roughly 25 minutes. Reading: about 25 questions, roughly 22 minutes. No writing or speaking section at this level.

This mock is modeled on that shape, not identical to it — ours uses 20 fresh questions per section with shortened timers (15 min listening, 20 min reading) so a full run stays practical.
