Don't confuse with

Two horizontal lines and one vertical — the only question is which line is longer. In 土 (tǔ, earth/soil) the bottom line is longer, like a wide mound of dirt. In 士 (shì, scholar/gentleman) the top line is longer, like broad shoulders standing tall. Bottom-heavy is earth; top-heavy is the scholar.
