Don't confuse with

卖 (mài, to sell) is simply 买 (mǎi, to buy) with one extra stroke crowning the top — historically a compressed "出" (to go out), since selling is goods "going out" after buying. If there's an extra stroke on top, it's 卖; the plainer one underneath is 买.
